How to Control your Self-Talk for a Better Life

Positive and Negative Self TalkThis inner or subconscious voice in our head gives sends messages. Sometimes the messages are of positivity and empowerment, and at other times they are negative and detrimental.  It is this voice that influences our behaviour and either helps or hinders us.  It is absolutely vital that you get a control of this inner voice or you will remain at the mercy of its ebbs and flows of negativity if you let it.

Your outer world is made up of the other things – other people, buildings, circumstances, family, the weather, your outer environment.  Within your inner world, there is a voice – This is your inner voice of thought. Our Inner Voices talk to us in certain ways sometimes referred to as self-talk.

The great news is that we can program our Inner Voice and become the voice and the person we wish to be. What we say with our Inner Voice will show up as ‘living’ to the Outer World people. This is great news because it means our Inner Voice is powerful. It means you are powerful. The more you choose to program a positive voice, the more powerful you will be.

Taking Control

To gain control over your inner voice and end the negative self talk, you first need to be aware of it first.  More techniques for discovering and resolving this issue are found in the Capstone Pattern book.  You may even already acknowledge that you may have an issue with negative self talk, however one of the keys here is recognizing as and when it is occurring.

As an example, I’m competitive athlete that practices Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  As recently as last weekend, as the final seconds was counting during a sparring session with one of my team mates.  With just the last three or so seconds remaining, I was ‘swept’ which means I was pretty much tripped over, ending with my back on the floor and resulting in my training partner gaining points.

The following few seconds I noticed my thought starting to focusing around the loss and the mistakes I made..  As these thoughts started to build and turn into a downward spiral of negativity, I stopped myself and thanked my partner for teaching me a valuable lesson as now I know what not to do next time.  I actually congratulated myself for lasting as long as I did in a dominating position and also for noticing and transmuting my thoughts positively after the sparring round.

In other situations, when we focus on the negative thought and inner dialogue, these tend to bear heavier and heavier until they manifest themselves outwardly in ways such as various illness such as stress or depression.

Most of our thoughts happen so fast, we aren’t even aware that they are happening.  Paying attention to these thoughts can help transform you into a more positive individual.
